Kirk, me, Kyle and Dana went to the Del Mar Racetrack on Labor Day.

I felt like I was in a movie — probably because I’ve only ever seen horse racing in the movies. Though, the Del Mar Racetrack was started by a bunch of actors, including Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante and Oliver Hardy.

The air was electric; you could feel the money being won and lost all around you.

We bet too, on a few races. Bets can be placed in a variety of ways. I liked to pick one horse to “Place” or “Show” meaning to take first or second, or place in the top three. Simple and easy bets.

When the race began, the crowd came alive. “Come on, come on, come ON!” Cheering and yelling rang out across the grandstands.

You’ve gotta bet big to win big.

Unfortunately, I bet small and won nothing, but the races aren’t all about gambling. They’re about wearing cute dresses, stuffing your face with kettle corn, and cheering along with the crowd.

And taking silly photos. ☼
